How It All Started
Back in 2014, the idea for Clothes-Rack.com didn't come from some grand business plan or a fancy MBA pitch deck. It came from a genuinely frustrating experience at our own wedding.
Our founder — a guy named Mark — was trying to rent a tuxedo for his big day. He went to three different stores, dealt with pushy salespeople, got measured incorrectly, and somehow ended up paying nearly double what he expected. The tuxedo itself? Fine, but nothing special. The whole experience left a bad taste in his mouth. He kept thinking: this shouldn't be this hard.
So instead of just complaining about it, he decided to fix it. He opened a small shop off College Street in Auburn with a simple philosophy: fair prices, honest advice, and zero pressure. No hard sell. No confusion. Just great formalwear and people who actually want to help you look good.
The first year was rough. We're not going to sugarcoat it. There were days when we questioned everything. But word of mouth in a town like Auburn moves fast, and once a few people realized we were doing things differently — actually listening, not upselling, making sure the fit was right — the phone started ringing.
Fast forward to today, and we've helped over 15,000 customers. We've dressed entire wedding parties, prom crews, military ball attendees, and more than a few nervous first-timers who had never worn a suit in their lives. The shop has grown from that single rack to hundreds of styles and sizes, but the philosophy hasn't changed one bit. We're still just a team of people who care about how you look.
"You don't have to be a suit guy to shop with us. You don't even have to know what a peak lapel is. Just tell us where you're going, and we'll handle the rest."
What really sets us apart isn't the inventory — though we're proud of what we carry — it's the human element. We remember names. We remember past events. We remember when someone's daughter had her prom last year and they're back this year for their son. That kind of connection doesn't happen at chain stores, and it's something we actively fight to keep as we grow.
We're also deeply rooted in the Auburn community. We sponsor local high school events, donate formalwear to students who can't afford it, and partner with local organizations throughout the year. Auburn gave us our start, and we take that responsibility seriously.
If you've never been to a formalwear shop before, we get it — it can feel intimidating. But honestly? That's our favorite kind of customer. There's nothing we love more than taking someone who has no idea what they're doing, walking them through the process, and watching them light up when they see themselves in the mirror looking sharp. That moment never gets old.
Thanks for taking the time to learn about us. Whether you're here to rent a tuxedo for a one-time event or you're looking for a long-term formalwear partner, we're glad you found us. Come visit — the coffee's always on, and we'd love to meet you.
